On Saturday, November 17, a
private opening was held for Copia members. The Grand Opening Parade and
dedication would be on Sunday.
The length of First Street
along the Copia grounds was converted into "Wine Tasting Boulevard",
with more than 100 American Wineries set up in white tents and pouring tastes
for visitors. Other food and beverage producers offered samples of their wares
as did magazine publishers and other wine and food related organizations.
Nick
Stellino, (right)
who will soon begin filming his fourth season of Cucina
Amore for PBS, provided cooking demonstrations courtesy of
Kitchenaid and Bertolli Olive Oil.
Hugh Johnson,
co-author of the World Atlas of Wine, and the beloved Julia
Child participated in a
panel discussion in the morning, and made themselves available in the
afternoon for book signing on the garden loggia outside the bookshop.

It was particularly wonderful
to see Ms. Child; despite her 89 years of age, her eyes are clear, her voice
is strong and there can be no doubt that she is as alive and vibrant a
personality as ever. Her continued involvement in television and projects like
Copia speaks volumes about her vigor and vitality. One cannot ignore a sense
of awe at being in her presence, and acknowledging a lifetime of extraordinary
accomplishment. We wish her a long and comfortable retirement in Santa
Barbara. |

In addition, members of the
Napa Valley Repertory Theatre and the Napa Valley Symphony provided
entertainment inside the Center, and in the amphitheater (right)
throughout the day.
