Ecard & Morey St. Denis

There we sat in the shadow of Lyon airport - two burly, unshaven men sharing a "convenience store" ham sandwich. True, we looked ridiculous in our silver Ford Focus hatchback laden with meager luggage and great renderings of cardboard, duct tape and Styrofoam that would eventually transport our wine treasures back to the USA. The annual event takes place in a civic auditorium filled with about 60 trade show styled booths, each flanked by a few large spittoons. Participants can enter, depart (for a snack at the outdoor food stalls, a brisk walk, or an oft frustrating trip to that cursed ATM), and reenter as often as they like in a given day Not having had enough of a good thing, we adjourned to my palatial roadside motel room. We were greeted by pungent scents emanating from my extra bedroom that served as our cheese cave/wine cellar on the trip - we sealed the door. Just as we noticed Brun's small wall sign and attempted to enter the parking lot, we were joined at the very same spot by a postal truck, a farm tractor, and a fast moving van. The thirty seconds of bedlam was past us, but the aforementioned van had pulled to the side of the road. A man jumped from the door, walking quickly and purposefully toward us. The closest any of us had to a weapon was a water bottle rolling at our feet - fortunately none was needed, as the fast moving man proved to be Eric Texier. Looking out from J.P. Brun’s winery, my vision of Burgundy was in stark contrast to the brown hues of winter in the Rhone Valley – everything was green and lush…the rolling hills and twisting roads were charming. After grabbing a few slices of leftover pizza from the Dog’s vehicle, we headed for Beaune.

Thierry Allemand

We arrived to find Thierry entertaining two visiting wine makers associated with Tin Shed in (Eden Valley) Australia. Not unlike his wines, Allemand had a bit of an edge to him . . .
