Mr. Ridge Tops the Tasting!

Whenever The Canadian Zinpeople visit, this taster makes a point of pulling a Ridge Zinfandel from "the cellar;" our mutual love for this fine producer is well documented in these pages. This time, a 1993 Geyserville was selected and poured, eliciting "oohs" and "ahhs" from the assembled group. (Notes for this wine can be found in the companion piece, "Mr. Ridge Comes A-Knockin'.") Zinchick was so pleased, she graced this taster with a big kiss on the cheek (of my face, of course), telling me that she really hadn't cared much for any of the southern Rhones. (The Director later admitted to the same reaction.) I found this gesture so endearing, I uncorked another, and we doubled our pleasure!

Chanteuse also loved the Geyserville, saying it blew all the others away. Ultimately, this taster would probably agree; however, the comparison is like the old "apples and oranges" analogy. Southern Rhones and Zinfandels are different animals, and the big, upfront fruit of the new world winemaking style will almost always overwhelm the more restrained, traditionally made French wines. Still, both are wonderful, in their own way, and contributed to one of our best tastings yet.

A BIG Gang thanks to Chartreuse and The Bookseller for the great Châteauneufs!
