Red wine bargains are getting harder to find these days, especially those from California. Fortunately, such is not the case with the south of France, especially when you tack on a 10% case discount to the list prices. (Bastardos Rules of Wine Acquisition; Rule # 1. ALWAYS buy by the case!) Here are three of our most recent finds. 1994 Domaine Deshenrys Coteaux du Languedoc $9.99 We tasted these two together recently for obvious reasons; same region, same vintage, same price. What we found were a pair of terrific bargains with rather different flavor profiles. The Deshenrys is an inky purple garnet with big aromas of meaty, smoky plum and prune and the slightest hint of the barnyard. palate, the flavors fan out to include notes of rich red currant, chocolate and hints of cola and ginger. Ready to drink now, this is one fine glass of wine. Imported by New Castle Imports, Inc.; Myrtle Beach, SC. The Mas des Chimeres was initially overpowered somewhat, after a taste of the Deshenrys, but still, its very nice on its own terms. Dark garnet, with flavors and aromas of plum, red currant and chocolate and a creamy mouthfeel, its not as complex as the first selection, but repeated samplings have proven it to be clean, round and flavorful. 90 % Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Imported by Vins Fins Import Marketing Co., Great Neck NY. 1995 Chateau d'Oupia Minervois $7.99 The latest edition of this producer's regular bottling is an inky garnet colored wine with a somewhat dense mouthfeel. Though not particularly complex, the rich black fruit and black olive flavors are intense, with good acidity. This one is good now; we've had several over the last month or so. However, a year or two in "the cellar" would soften up the tannins nicely, and make it even better; it's just hard to keep your hands off of an $8 red that's this tasty. 60% Carignane, 30% Syrah, 10% Grenache.
