And from Cedarville Vineyards in El Dorado County, their first release
- 1998 Syrah Estate bottled - somewhat muted brambly fruit in the nose -
in the mouth the wine has good intensity and still shows some of those
briery qualities mixed in with purple and black stone fruits - good
balance and a lingering finish - a very nice first effort from Cedarville
Vineyards, and we will be keeping our eyes on these folks as their
Zinfandel, Cabernet and other varietals are released. Jonathon
Lachs and
his partner, Susan Marks are building their dream in El Dorado County, and
we wish them luck.
From Jeff Cohn and JC Cellars, his 1999 Viognier from Rodney's Vineyard in Santa Barbara - pretty floral aromatics over balanced with zesty citrus aromatics - a bit more successful in the mouth but there's still a slight bitterness in the finish -not my style of Viognier. 1996 Syrah from Ventana Vineyards in Monterey - rather subdued aromatics - pleasing sweet fruit on the palate- a smooth entry - a nicely balanced and easy drinking Syrah with a clean finish. 1998 Petite Sirah from barrel- jammy black fruits in the nose - fairly big wine in the mouth with moderate tannins - a well balanced wine with structure that bodes well for aging. 1999 Syrah Philary Vineyards S&M Block - from
Atlas Peak - dense
red and purple color -pleasant robust Syrah aromatics with spice and hints
of fat - a big wine that need some time to come around, but shows good
density of fruit and broad flavors on the palate - this will be a good one
with little time. |
